When telling a couple of people that I plan to run in the Princess Half Marathon, their first response to me has been "Which Princess are you going to be?"...what??? I've also heard rumor that when registering you get to choose which Princess you get to be, which leads me to believe that I...need to pick out which Princess I want to be! Now, as a kid, and well into my early teenage years I managed to talk my parents into buying me quite the collection of Disney Princess paraphanalia. Between the movies, towels, sing-a-long tapes (Yes, I grew up in the age of VHS tapes - gasp!) I'm quite familiar with the lives of said Princesses, but I can't just pick one randomly, I love them all, so I need to compare them, their lives, who their sidekicks were and of course, their love interests...
1. Snow White ('Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs')
Born into royalty, Snow White possesses a sunny disposition that carries her through even the most mundane of tasks and ensures that she’s always able to make the best out of any situation. Snow White’s easy-going nature serves her well after her evil stepmother tries to kill her and she’s forced to flee her kingdom, and it’s not long before the perpetually upbeat princess finds herself living among a crew of comically mismatched dwarves. And though she falls into a coma after biting into a poisoned apple, Snow White eventually enjoys a deservedly upbeat conclusion following a kiss from the strapping Prince.
Villain: The Queen
Sidekicks: Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey
Love Interest: The Prince
2. Cinderella ('Cinderella')
Much like Snow White, Cinderella maintains an upbeat demeanor even in the face of some seriously harsh treatment from her evil stepmother (and her evil stepsisters). Cinderella’s friendship with a pair of friendly mice, Gus and Jaq, helps her get through her tedious existence, while a helpful Fairy Godmother ensures that she’s able to attend a royal ball – where she meets and falls for the love of her life, Prince Charming. Her evil stepmother’s attempts at matching the handsome Prince with either one of her two daughters are inevitably foiled, which effectively paves the way for Cinderella to live happily ever after with the lucky suitor.
Villain: Lady Tremaine
Sidekicks: Gus and Jaq
Love Interest: Prince Charming
3. Princess Aurora ('Sleeping Beauty'’)
Though she has very little screen time, Princess Aurora undoubtedly establishes herself as one of Disney’s most iconic screen Princesses. Her personable nature is a direct result of receiving gifts of beauty and song from good fairies Flora and Fauna, although she is also visited by an evil fairy named Maleficent and cursed to die on her 16th birthday. Nevertheless, Princess Aurora’s inherently friendly demeanor draws her to Prince Phillips and it’s his kiss that ultimately defeats Maleficent’s curse.
Villain: Maleficent
Sidekicks: Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather
Love Interest: Prince Phillip
4. Princess Ariel ('The Little Mermaid')
The youngest of King Triton’s seven daughters, Princess Ariel is an adventurous mermaid whose curiosity has the tendency to anger her over-protective father. Princess Ariel’s burning desire to explore the world outside her kingdom leads her directly into the arms of the evil Sea Witch Ursula, who agrees to transform her in three days but strips her of her ability to speak. Even without her voice, Princess Ariel’s dynamic personality shines through, however, and it’s not long before the handsome Prince Eric finds himself falling for her.
Villain: Ursula
Sidekicks: Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle
Love Interest: Prince Eric
5. Princess Jasmine ('Aladdin')
Raised in opulent splendor, Princess Jasmine is an independent teenager who has come to resent the fiercely old-fashioned ways of her culture. Her rebellious nature is most directly reflected in her decision to run away from home, and it’s on the streets of Agrabah that Princess Jasmine inevitably meets the love of her life, Aladdin. Before she can enjoy her happily-ever-after with the young man, however, Princess Jasmine must put aside her fears and help defeat the evil Jafar.
Villains: Jafar and Iago
Sidekick: The Genie and Abu
Love Interest: Aladdin
6. Belle ('Beauty and the Beast')
One of the few Disney Princesses not born into royalty, Belle is a free-thinking young woman who spends her days exploring the countryside and reading a variety of books. Belle also possesses a bravery that’s nothing short of admirable, as she courageously offers to take her father’s place after he’s held captive by the Beast. It’s Belle’s refusal to judge a book by its cover that allows her to fall for the man trapped inside the Beast’s monstrous shell, which paves the way for an appropriately upbeat conclusion that sees the Beast and his servants regain their human forms.
Villain: Gaston
Sidekicks: Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Cogsworth, and Chip
Love Interest: The Beast
7. Pocahontas ('Pocahontas')
The only Disney Princess to be based on a real-life figure, Pocahontas is a self-confident, free-spirited Native American who has earned the respect and admiration of both her family members and those in her community. She’s not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, even if this means going against the accepted norms of her culture. Pocahontas’ belief that one should always follow one’s heart leads her to romance a British settler named John Smith, with the clash of cultures that ensues eventually showing both sides that they share more similarities than differences.
Villains: Governor Ratcliffe and Kocoum
Sidekick: Meeko
Love Interest: John Smith
I'm torn...I know it's definitely not going to be:
Snow White, Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty rely to much on men, and Cinderella is almost to real with the way women will beat each other down to try and be the best, we want none of that here.
My favorites as a kid were always the Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and The Beast, so it's a toss up between, Ariel, Jasmine, and Belle. Maybe I'll watch the movies with Kaitlyn and let her pick for me.
